For Tile installations and stone installations, the first question is about substrate or what is on the floor now?  Linoleum is an acceptable surface for tile, provided it is on the floor securely.  If there is carpet on the floor, of course this will have to be removed, and the next question is what is underneath the carpet.  If the sheeting is 3/4" plywood, we have an acceptable surface for tile.  If it is OSB or particle board, chances are we now need backerboard on the floor before we install tile.  This is a job task that is not difficult, and often customers elect to do this themselves to save money.  If the install will not be diagonal, measuring requires net square footage and add 5%.  If it is decided to install diagonally, add 10%.  Print this page and plug in the numbers to the questions and you will have an accurate idea of the cost of your tile installation.
