Hardwood installations and Laminate installations are different in that hardwood is a attached floor and laminate is a floating floor, even though there are floating hardwood floors as well.  Hardwoods can be nailed down, glued, sometimes stapled, and most all Laminates today are snap together and floating. The most important question for a hardwood installation is what kind of hardwood are you buying.  There are several different types, and each one is installed with a different method.  The other important question is what is the substrate or is the floor wood or concrete?  I am a big fan of bamboo as this is renewable resource, and the product is as hard as most hardwoods.  It is quite beautiful and most times is a nail down installation, and is one of the best floors around.  But wood comes in many flavors, and this is obviously a preference.  Engineered hardwoods are generally like plywood and can be stapled or glued.  Solid woods are SOLID WOOD and are generally nailed with a special cleat nail, a more solid installation. 

When measuring for hardwood, if you measure the net square footage of the project and add 5% you will arrive a acceptable number for your installation.  Plug in the numbers below and you will arrive at ball park for your Hardwood installation or Laminate installation.
