The whole point of talking with the installer first is to create the correct expectations for the project.  Collecting the accurate information about the project, and then allowing the customer to have and understand this information.  This empowers the customer to find and negotiate the cost of the products.

Most retailers mark up labor a margin of 35%.  For example: if the average installer charges $3.75 per square foot for installing ceramic, the retailer will use this formula to arrive at what they will charge the customer; $3.75 divided by .65 which equals $5.76.  This is called margin.  If you have a project that is 400 square feet, you will pay $800.00 more buying the labor from the retailer.  $800.00 is a lot of money.  In addition, answers never come quickly when you begin with the stores.  When you first arrive and are expecting to find how much your project will cost, they can't answer this as they need the accurate measurements.  They then need to make an appointment to send someone out to measure and detail the project.  Next, this person need to return this information to the store.  The store then needs to evaluate the information and put together the estimate.  They will finally call with the quote, and if you accept, they will need to find an installer that accepts the job.  Hopefully after this process, the information is all correct, and not missmeasured or inaccurately evaluated.  Ever notice how grouchy installers are that work for the retailers??
